1- Selection of an appropriate text (0-3 points)
The student includes a copy of a passage from the week’s reading assignment that illustrates an important aspect of the assigned text (1 point) other than introductory material (1 point) and provides a clear citation to the selected text including a page number if relevant (so that it can be found in the larger text; 1 point).
2- Feedback Content (0-7 points)
The student writes an original paragraph (1 point) that relates to the copied passage (1 point) and provides a clear explanation of the student’s intellectual reason or reasons for selecting the text (3 points). The paragraph follows standard conventions for academic writing, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar (2 points).
A clear Example:
“The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world… He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.” (United States Declaration of Independence)
Among the reasons listed in the Declaration of Independence to justify the American colonies’ independence from the British Empire, the Continental Congress included King George’s efforts to obstruct immigration. Immigration is also an important issue in modern American politics. However, a large part of the public discussion of immigration now seems concerned with imposing limits on people’s ability to settle in America. I am curious how and why Americans’ views of immigration changed over time, from a natural and important part of the process of building their country to something ominous and threatening.
